The human race is in trouble. We’ve been in trouble for a long time. So much time, money and human resources have been and continue to be expended to get us out of the mess and trouble we’re in. Jesus came into the world to confront and deal with all the trouble and mess once and for all. He could’ve chosen another way. When confronted by betrayal, angry people, trouble and the mess we’re in, Jesus could’ve called upon heaven’s powerful angels to rescue him. Instead, kneeling in prayer under an Olive tree In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus chose a Way that leads to forgiveness, freedom, hope and resurrection. Jesus chose the Way of the cross by praying, ‘my father, if there is no other way than this, drinking this cup to the dregs, I’m ready. Do it your way’ (Matthew 26 v 42 MSG). On the cross, Jesus took upon himself all the mess, sin and trouble of all humanity. And more personally Jesus took your place on that cross. He drunk the cup of suffering for us all. When you are deeply depressed, overwhelmed with sorrow, feeling a mess, troubled or in the middle of tough times, it is such an encouragement to know that Jesus has experienced all that you face and far more. He knows what you are going through and you can follow his example by submitting your ways to God. Doing it God’s way meant suffering and death for Jesus. However, his death and resurrection brought redemption to the whole world. Jesus continues to bring help, strength and comfort to all who are in trouble and to all who trust in him.
